b. 1930
Royal Robertson, a sign painter by trade, was born
in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana in 1930. After a brief departure,
he returned to his native state where he spent the rest of his life.
Scared by the end of a troubled 19 year marriage, and scorned by
his neighbors, Robertson turned to obsessively recording his visions.
His themes included futuristic images of aliens, fantasticmodes
of travel, architectural dream houses and temples, and tormented
memories of his unfaithful wife, Adell, and their spoiled marriage.
Robertson's home environment was filled with his work; displayed
publicly in the yard were the signs cursing Adell, and inside were
the ubiquitous drawings and shrines to her memory. Painted on poster
board with magic markers and tempera, the proportionally correct
architectural drawings demonstrate his accomplished skills as a
sign painter. |
